Rocawear's Founders

Shawn Corey Carter, popularly known for his stage name as Jay-Z, is one of the many American hip-hop artist that gain popularity because of his music and his talent as a hip-hop artist. A former CEO of Def Jam Recordings and Roc-A-Fella Records, hes also known to co-own The 40/40 Club and the New Jersey Nets. Because of his business ventures, Jay-Z is considered as one of the most financially successful hip hop artists and entrepreneurs in America, having sold over 26 million units in the United States and receiving several Grammy Awards Gucci Duchessa for his musical work. Other than his business ventures, Jay-Z was also the co-founder of one of the most popular brands of urban clothing today, rocawear.

Founding of Rocawear

It was in 1999 that Jay-Z, along with partners Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke, founded the clothing line rocawear. Like Jay-Z as well as co-branded product with Pro-Keds, State Property, and Team Roc.

New Owners

In 2006, reports indicated that Jay-Z has become the sole owner of rocawear after following a falling out with co-founder Damon Versace Handbags Dash. Dash sold his stake in Rocawear for $30 million to former partner, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. In March 2007, Jay-Z sold the rights to the Rocawear brand to Iconix Brand Group, for $204 million.

Iconix Brand Group is a brand management company that licenses brands to retailers and manufacturers primarily in the apparel, footwear, and apparel accessory industries. Its brands are available in such stores as Kohls, Target and JC Penney. Although he already sold the rights to Iconix, Jay-Z still retained retain his stake in the company and will continue to oversee the marketing, licensing and product development.

From then on, Rocawear still received the same popularity it had when it was still owned by Jay-Z Gucci Chain and his partners.
